The Atlantic Forest of South America

The Atlantic Forest of South America

The Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina is one of the most devastated and highly threatened ecosystems on the planet; less than 8% of the original forest remains, and this small surviving fragment is facing intense population pressure from all sides.

The Atlantic Forest of South America presents a detailed assessment of the state of biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest. Separate sections examine each of the three countries that are home to the forest, starting with a brief overview of the dynamics of biodiversity loss in that particular country. The overview is followed by individual chapters that analyze the current status and monitoring of biodiversity, conservation priorities and important species, socioeconomic drivers of deforestation, policy initiatives for conservation, and the capacity of local institutions to provide solutions and implement effective conservation actions.

Zoonoses and Communicable Diseases Common to Man and Animals

The second volume in this large compendium of zoonoses and communicable diseases common to man and animals provides a detailed overview of chlamydioses, rickettsioses, and viroses, with information ranging from their first appearance and most important outbreaks to the latest scientific knowledge of the diseases and their causative agents.

The chapters provide the following information on each disease:
• etiology • geographic distribution • symptoms and occurrence in
man and animals • source of infection and mode of transmission
• role of animals in its epidemiology • diagnostic techniques, and
• prevention and control measures.

This book is an essential tool for biologists, parasitologists, virologists, veterinarians, physicians, epidemiologists, and workers in public health and animal health institutions, as well as professors, researchers, and students in these areas.

Chagas' Disease and the Nervous System

Chagas' Disease and the Nervous System

Leading experts in the fields of Chagas’ disease research contributed 19 chapters to this volume. It begins with an overview of the health problems posed by Chagas' disease (also known as American trypanosomiasis) and how they are being addressed through improved diagnosis and multifaceted research. This overview is followed by studies of specific alterations in autonomic, peripheral, and central nervous functions produced by chagasic infections in humans. The contributors also look at the role played by the body's immune response to the parasite and explore nervous system pathology in experimental animal models.
